The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has today (Tuesday 24th June) launched six on-line courses on its e-learning portal http://hsalearning.ie, aimed at employees with supervisory or managerial responsibilities in healthcare, such as line managers and department heads. The short awareness-raising courses are free of charge and have been developed by the Authority with the aim of improving practical awareness of workplace safety, health and welfare in a healthcare work environment. The courses qualify for continuous professional development (cpd) points from Bord Altranais.

The six short courses are available in the following areas and take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. They can be taken as stand-alone modules or as a complete suite.

Managing Health and Safety in Healthcare:

  1. Legislation and Risk Assessment
  2. Safety Management
  3. Biological Agent Hazards
  4. Chemical Agent Hazards
  5. Physical Hazards
  6. Psychosocial Hazards

Senior Inspector for Healthcare and Public Sector Strategy, HSA, Anne Maria O'Connor said, "These courses have been designed for employees with supervisory or managerial responsibilities in healthcare such as line managers and department heads. Managing health and safety at work is not just a legal requirement, it demonstrates good governance and reduces the number of employee working days lost through illness and injury. The content is suitable across all healthcare settings such as: dental surgeries, GP practices, hospitals, nursing and residential care."

HSA's Education Manager, Joanne Harmon said, "These short on-line courses will also be of interest to anyone delivering education or training around health and safety in healthcare settings. The 'group manager' facility means that employers, managers or tutors can register groups of learners to take a course and remotely monitor their progress. Learners can also take courses during their own time and at their own pace, logging on and off when it suits, and returning to courses when it's convenient.

Ms. Harmon added, "Learners can take a short assessment at the end of each course, and on passing, can download their certificate of completion. Although not a formal qualification, certification can form part of an individual's training record or continuous professional development record."
